Walty Walt, that racy Humanist!May 21, 2010
May 20 AP 140– Thinkin’ about Walt Whitman… n’ stuff; food for thought. Dad brought the poem To the States from Leaves of Grass to my attention:
To the States or any one of them, or any city of the States,
Resist much, obey little,
Once unquestioning obedience, once fully enslaved,
Once fully enslaved, no nation, state, city of this earth, ever
afterward resumes its liberty.
Walt Whitman was against slavery but did not support the abolitionist movement because he thought it was too politically extreme and a threat to democracy. I didn’t know this! Hm! I’d always thought the same thing.
So anyway, I won’t go into it further. It just sparked my interest. Civil War stuff often does for some reason.
